What causes ceramide levels to fall?
Age, over-cleansing, harsh actives, environmental stress, and some medical conditions all deplete ceramide content in the barrier. Frequent use of strong exfoliants or surfactant-heavy cleansers without a ceramide-restoring moisturiser is one of the most common causes of ceramide depletion.
Are all ceramides the same?
No. There are multiple ceramide types, numbered 1 through 12, each with a distinct role in the barrier structure. The most skin-replenishing ceramide complexes use a blend of multiple types, typically ceramides 1, 3, and 6-II, along with cholesterol and fatty acids to match the natural barrier ratio.
