Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as messengers in the skin, signalling cells to perform specific tasks like building collagen or calming inflammation. In topical formulas, they help maintain firmness by supporting the structures that keep skin taut and resilient over time.
What it actually does
Peptides are fragments of proteins, typically two to fifty amino acids linked in sequence. When applied topically, certain peptides penetrate the stratum corneum and reach the upper dermis, where they bind to fibroblast receptors. This binding can upregulate collagen and elastin synthesis, the structural proteins that give skin its firmness and rebound. Other peptides inhibit neurotransmitter release at the dermal-epidermal junction, which can soften the appearance of expression lines by reducing repetitive muscle contractions.
Different peptide sequences perform different roles. Matrixyl-type peptides (palmitoyl tripeptide-1, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7) signal collagen production. Argireline-like hexapeptides mimic the action of botulinum toxin on a smaller scale. Copper peptides assist in wound healing and antioxidant defence. The efficacy of any peptide depends on its molecular weight, stability in the formula, and the vehicle that carries it through the skin barrier. In well-constructed serums and creams, peptides work quietly over weeks, not days.

What to expect, and when
In the first week, peptides do not produce visible change. By day ten, some users notice skin feels slightly firmer to the touch, a subtle shift in bounce rather than a tightening sensation. Around day twenty-one, fine lines may appear softer, particularly around the eyes and forehead, as collagen remodelling begins. By day twenty-eight, the skin's overall texture often feels smoother and more even. What does not happen: dramatic lifting, immediate wrinkle erasure, or a frozen appearance. Peptides work within the skin's natural repair cycle, which takes roughly four weeks. Results plateau after three months unless the formula is part of a broader ritual that includes sun protection and consistent hydration. Realistic expectations matter more than promises.
How to layer it in your ritual
Peptides sit in the treatment step, after cleansing and toning, before sealing with cream or oil. Apply a peptide serum to damp skin so it spreads easily and absorbs without friction. Wait thirty seconds for it to settle, then follow with a moisturiser that locks it in. Morning or night both work, but night allows longer contact time without sunscreen or makeup layered on top. For oily skin, a peptide serum alone may suffice in the morning. For dry skin, peptides need a rich cream afterward to prevent transepidermal water loss. Avoid layering peptides directly with strong acids or retinoids in the same step; alternate nights if both are in your ritual. Peptides are patient actives that reward consistency, not intensity.
