A moisturiser is the final layer of the face ritual, the cream or gel that holds the actives underneath and completes the surface. OVESSI moisturisers range from featherweight gels for oily and combination skin to ceramide-rich balms for the driest barrier. Do I need a moisturiser if I already use a serum?
Yes. A serum delivers actives but does not seal. A moisturiser provides the occlusive or semi-occlusive layer that prevents transepidermal water loss and holds the serum benefit in place. They perform different functions and work together, not interchangeably.
What is the difference between a gel moisturiser and a cream?
Gel moisturisers are lighter, water-based, and suit oily, combination, or dehydrated skin types. Creams are richer, often oil-based, and suit normal to dry or barrier-compromised skin. In humid climates, a lighter gel may be preferred even by those who use a cream in winter.
Can I apply moisturiser over a retinol alternative?
Yes, and it is recommended. Applying a moisturiser after a retinol-alternative serum buffers the active, reducing the potential for dryness or sensitivity while extending the benefit of the treatment layer. It is not optional when introducing any resurfacing active.
Should I use a different moisturiser in the morning and the evening?
Not necessarily, but many people find a lighter gel in the morning and a richer cream at night suits their skin and their layering sequence. Morning moisture needs to sit well under SPF. Evening moisture can be richer since there is no product on top. Let the texture guide you.
