Salicylic acid questions
What concentration of salicylic acid is effective?
For daily use, 0.5% to 2% is the effective range. Two percent is the standard over-the-counter maximum and is sufficient for most congestion concerns. Higher concentrations are found in professional treatments. Daily use at 1% to 2% is more effective than infrequent use at higher concentrations.
Can salicylic acid be used on sensitive skin?
With care and at lower concentrations. Start at 0.5% every other day and observe the response before increasing frequency or concentration. If the skin is very reactive or the barrier is compromised, address the barrier first before introducing any acid, including salicylic acid.
Can I use salicylic acid and niacinamide together?
Yes. This is one of the most effective combinations for blemish-prone skin. Salicylic acid clears the pore and niacinamide calms the inflammation and post-blemish pigmentation that follows. Apply salicylic acid in the cleanse or treatment step and niacinamide in the serum step after.
Does salicylic acid work on blackheads as well as active blemishes?
Yes. Blackheads are oxidised sebum plugs sitting in the pore opening. Salicylic acid dissolves the plug structure over time with consistent use. Results on blackheads are gradual, typically visible over four to eight weeks of daily application, rather than immediate.
