Seasonal skincare

How the same skin asks for different layers in winter than in summer. How OVESSI adapts a ritual through the year without rebuilding it.

Seasonal skincare is the practice of adjusting care as weather, indoor heating, humidity and light levels change through the year. Skin does not behave the same way in January as it does in July, and the shift is not cosmetic alone. At OVESSI, we treat it as a real concern because changes in temperature, air moisture and UV exposure alter barrier function, hydration, oil balance and visible reactivity.

What is happening

As seasons change, the skin is asked to regulate itself under different external pressures. In colder, drier conditions, lower ambient humidity and indoor heating increase transepidermal water loss, which means water escapes more readily through the stratum corneum. Corneocytes can become less supple, the lipid matrix can feel depleted and skin may look dull, tight or rough. In warmer months, heat and humidity can increase sebum production, alter how quickly sweat evaporates and make congestion more likely for some. UV exposure also shifts across the year, influencing melanocytes, pigmentation behaviour and oxidative stress even on overcast days. The result is often a moving target, where skin can feel dehydrated, reactive or unbalanced depending on the season, the environment and the condition of the barrier.

The OVESSI point of view

Our view is shaped first by Scandinavian restraint. We prefer fewer steps, fewer claims and ingredients with evidence at levels that perform. Seasonal skincare, to us, is not about rebuilding an entire shelf four times a year. It is about keeping the core ritual steady, then adjusting texture, weight and frequency with precision. We borrow the logic of Korean layered care, but keep it calm and edited. In practice, that means supporting the barrier when transepidermal water loss rises, using lighter hydration when sebum is more active, and keeping daily UV protection consistent throughout the year. If your skin is also showing signs of Dehydrated skin, Sensitive skin or a Damaged skin barrier, we treat those as connected expressions of the same shift.

The ritual we built for it

We usually begin with The Mist : Microbiome Face Mist to lightly hydrate and prepare the skin for what follows. Next comes The Jelly : Prebiotic Hydration Serum, pressed into damp skin so water binding ingredients can work more effectively within the upper layers of the stratum corneum. The third step depends on season and skin feel. In warmer, more humid weather, The Balance : Oil-Free Hydrating Gel gives enough hydration without extra richness. In colder months, or when heating has left skin tight, The Velvet : Nourishing Rich Face Cream offers a more cushioning finish. If skin feels especially dry, a few drops of The Nectar : Nourishing Facial Oil can be pressed on last to reduce water loss. By day, finish with The Filter : SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen. This is the logic behind The Barrier Ritual.

The actives that answer it

Ceramides help reinforce the lipid matrix between corneocytes, which is especially useful when cold air and heating leave skin feeling less resilient. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, meaning it binds water in the upper layers of skin and helps relieve the tight, papery feeling that often appears when humidity drops. Niacinamide B3 is valuable across seasons because it supports barrier function, helps regulate visible oiliness and can soften the look of uneven tone that becomes more apparent after summer light exposure. Panthenol works as a humectant and skin conditioning ingredient, helping to soothe periods of seasonal reactivity while supporting a more comfortable surface feel.

Products on our shelf

The Jelly : Prebiotic Hydration Serum is often the anchor product because seasonal shifts usually involve water balance first. The Velvet : Nourishing Rich Face Cream suits colder months, travel, wind exposure and any period when the barrier feels under strain. The Balance : Oil-Free Hydrating Gel makes sense in spring and summer, or for skin that wants hydration without a heavier finish. The Nectar : Nourishing Facial Oil is useful as a finishing layer when skin feels dry rather than simply dehydrated, particularly in the evening. The Filter : SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen matters year round, as UV exposure continues to influence pigmentation and oxidative stress even when temperatures are lower.

What to expect, and when

Within the first few days, skin often feels more comfortable, with less tightness after cleansing and a calmer surface by afternoon. By the end of week one, many people notice improved suppleness and less fluctuation between dryness and excess oil. Around weeks two to three, the skin can appear more settled overall, with fewer rough patches and a more even, rested look as the barrier is better supported. In our 28-Day Study, conducted with 68 participants across the UK, EU and US, aged 22 to 54, 87% said they saw a real difference by day 28. Seasonal skincare is rarely about overnight change. It is about giving skin the conditions to behave more consistently as the environment shifts around it.

Common questions

Do I need completely different products in every season? Usually not. We prefer a stable core ritual with small adjustments in texture and layering, such as using a richer cream in winter or a lighter gel in summer.

Why does my skin feel oily and dehydrated at the same time? Seasonal change can increase transepidermal water loss while also influencing sebum production. Skin can lack water in the stratum corneum yet still look shiny on the surface.

Should I still wear SPF in winter? Yes. UV exposure is present year round, and daily protection helps limit oxidative stress and the appearance of uneven pigmentation across seasons.
