Sodium PCA is the sodium salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, a component of the skin's natural moisturising factor. It sits in the outer layers of your epidermis, drawing water from the air and holding it against corneocytes to keep the barrier soft and pliable.

Sodium PCA is a humectant that binds moisture to the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of skin where dead keratinocytes stack like tiles. It occurs naturally as part of the NMF, the blend of amino acids, urea, and lactates that prevent transepidermal water loss. When applied topically, it pulls water molecules from the surrounding environment and anchors them to the intercellular matrix, keeping corneocytes hydrated and flexible. This reduces surface roughness and restores the barrier's ability to resist irritants.
Because it mirrors a compound your skin already produces, it integrates quietly into the lipid bilayer without disrupting pH or triggering sensitivity.
