THE FACE RITUAL · TONERS
The pause that prepares skin for everything after it.
Toners and essences are the most distinctly Korean step in the face ritual and the most misunderstood. They are not the astringent toners of an earlier era. They are the first hydration layer, pressed into skin while it is still slightly damp from cleansing, preparing the surface to receive the serum that follows. A prebiotic essence calms. A watery essence with hyaluronic acid plumps. Both make the next layer work better.
Texture smooths under a cotton pad. Skin reads clearer the next morning.

FREQUENTLY ASKED
Toner questions
Do I need a toner if I already use a serum?
A toner or essence performs a different function. It is not the serum applied earlier. It is a preparation step that increases skin’s hydration and receptiveness before the active serum. Skipping it reduces the effectiveness of what follows, particularly for dehydrated or combination skin.
Should I apply toner with a cotton pad or with my hands?
Hands, by preference. Press the toner between both palms and press into the face with upward pressure. This method delivers more product to the surface with less waste and avoids the mild surface friction of a cotton pad. Korean layering technique almost exclusively uses the hand-press method.
Can I use multiple essences at once?
Yes, and this is a standard approach in a Korean layered ritual. Apply from the thinnest to the thickest texture. Allow thirty seconds between layers. Two or three essence steps on dehydrated or dry skin are common and well-tolerated.
What is the difference between a toner and an essence?
The distinction has blurred over time, but in the OVESSI range, toners are balancing and pH-correcting first steps. Essences are nutrient-rich watery layers that target a specific concern such as hydration, brightening, or barrier support. An essence typically follows a toner in the layering sequence.
