Hyaluronic acid holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water, drawing moisture into the outer layers of the skin and holding it there. Should I apply hyaluronic acid serum to wet or dry skin?
Damp skin. Hyaluronic acid draws moisture from its environment as well as from deeper layers. On dry skin in a low-humidity environment, it can draw moisture upward from the dermis and leave the surface feeling tighter than before. Apply after toner, while the skin is still slightly damp, to give it the surface moisture to work with.
What is the difference between high and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid?
High molecular weight hyaluronic acid sits on the surface of the skin and forms a moisture-retaining film. Low molecular weight penetrates more deeply and provides hydration at a cellular level. Multi-molecular formulas combine both for a surface and deeper hydration effect simultaneously.
Is hyaluronic acid suitable for oily skin?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, not an oil. It adds no lipid content to the skin and works as well on oily and combination skin as it does on dry skin. Oily skin is often dehydrated at the surface, and hyaluronic acid addresses that condition without exacerbating oil production.
How long does the hydrating effect of hyaluronic acid last?
The surface plumping effect is visible within minutes of application but requires a moisturiser on top to seal it and prevent the humectant from evaporating the moisture back out. With a proper seal, the effect holds through the day. Twice-daily application is the standard for sustained results.
